"1st Place"

This work celebrates commonplace achievements through the act of appropriating the historical rosette ribbon. Frivolous activities, such as entering a cat into a very competitive grooming competition, or receiving an award at a craft fair, or winning first place at a robotic race, are necessary. These acts are constantly creating and describing our boundaries, giving us limits, giving us examples, of what is acceptable to do and what is not. By changing its scale, and simplifying the design, I have transformed a wearable award ribbon meant for one person to a large, unwearable object meant for many people to visually intake. Without the text or even a location for the text to exist, the ribbon acts as a viewfinder, allowing viewers to project themselves and others into the frame. My piece poses the question of what is worth celebrating, and asserts that everything is.
