Sizing it up

I am drawn to jewelry because of its tactile and engaging qualities, it is meant to be touched. What happens when that sense of tactility increases dramatically? What happens when jewelry becomes playful? These are questions I attempt to answer in a body of work called “Sizing it up”. Within this body of work, drastically enlarged jewelry objects are meant to invoke a sense of childlike curiosity and play. I invite the viewers to interact with these pieces in an open-ended way. My work aims to evoke curiosity, invite play, and provide an indexing of the body. Jewelry is precious in the sense that people are drawn to it, they feel an urge to touch it, wear it, adorn themselves. I’ve chosen to render these objects as easily identifiable jewelry as a means of activating curiosity within viewers. I am engaging our conditioning of how we use jewelry though increased scale. These objects are displayed on a slightly raised stage to imply a space designated for interacting with the work. A mirror is included in the display of this work to provide a constant feedback loop for participants, and to encourage spatial awareness of the body in relation to the objects.
